The nineties were not kind to the action movie. Whilst new action heroes like Bourne were forced to become almost Shakespearian in plot and even classics like the Die Hard movies had themselves horribly dumbed down for the sake of ticket money, things didn't look good. The return of Rambo was a quick flash rather then an epic comeback, fortunately Stalone has returned to bring back the testosterone shot action movie.

Surprisingly the movie has a plot deeper than your usual 80's fest, the characters are nicely rounded (mostly) and it all fits in very nicely around the action. Whilst the story has some nice moments (Micky Rourkes monologue in particular was superb) don't think thats its trying too hard, the movie knows its a killing fest and rightly so. The action is tight, gritty and brutal. Characters take punches, knives, bullets and fire, the way an action movie should work. Ignore the cries of those that its an all American flag waving affair, the characters are out for themselves, and don't care, there's no Red Scoprion style face palm commentary.

The movie is well shot, the action is frantic and visible (no ridiculous closeups in this movie) and the actors are all solid, the Stalone, Arnie, Willis scene is bitterly short, but great whilst it lasts. The move does have some flaws though. A few scenes drag down the otherwise solid plot, a couple of special effects look rather cheap (bruning man scene I'm looking at you) and a couple of the usually excellent one liners arnt delivered well enough.

Ignore the complaints by other reviewers, all those crying about its macho style and those stamping their feet about lack of plot (you don't order a pizza and expect to be served the worlds greatest meal thats healthy to boot) Its fun, violent and surprisingly well made. Go in there expecting an 80's throwback and you will not be disappointed!
