The most recent movie in this genre I saw was earlier this year "The lighting thief" – an ordinary young man with secret identity (unknown even to him) finds himself snatched out of the comfortable contemporary world and thrown into the vortex of some titanic struggle from bygone days. "Sorcerer" generally fulfils the expectations (provided they are not exceptionally high) for this sort of flick and has some interesting unique features of its own. Plot line? Forget it. All that you need to know is that it's a battle between two ancient sorcerers. Really, what more do you need? Oh yes, good old Merlin has been dragged into all these, if you really want to know.

I wouldn't go into special effects either – how fire balls are thrown, for example – they are there for you to see, not for me to talk about. What does worth mentioning is its tribute to the titular subject, Paul Dukas's composition rendered in the pinnacle of artistic achievement in Walt Disney's "Fantasia", with a wonderful parody scene of its own. Another thing I find quite interesting is the protagonists explaining magic with physics. Don't expect Isaac Asimov calibre sophistication and authenticity. It's all just movie mumble-jumble but still a lot of fun.

Nicholas Cage and Alfred Molina are worth watching, however silly the whole thing is, especially when they try earnestly to wrestle each other to the floor, among a thousand other things. Monica Bellucci fans may want to see more of her (er…in more ways than one) but then some people you can never satisfy. The young pair, somewhat Fonz-look-alike Jay Baruchel and absolutely wholesome-pretty Teresa Palmer, while forgettable as soon as the movie is over, are pleasant to look at while they are on screen.
